Background

Will was a group design assignment for the HCI course in my junior year.

Will is an app targeted at promoting users' critical thinking ability, which is a key ability in modern society. Like most workout app, such as Apple Fitness+, but it provides instruction and supervision for mind instead of the body.

Will contains 3 modules:

  1. “Will Learn”: it provides courses for the user

  2. “Will Note”: it provides a place where the user can explore questions to think about independently and note down their thoughts.

  3. “We Will”: it provides weak linked community for the user to share their progress of critical thinking

I designed the “Will Note” module. In the following, I will only be presenting my work for this module.

User requirement

  • Task analysis - persona

Jesse is......

  • a student

  • pressure mainly comes from exams and daily school routines

  • has strong will to enrich himself

  • eager to explore possibilities of future life

  • quite a lot of time to invest on learning and thinking.

  • Task analysis - using scenario

Jesse wants to train his mind. Unfortunately, he does not have a good idea of what to think, so he starts to read a lot of questions. Sadly, since questions are in words, he quickly gets bored. Just as he is about to give up searching, he has found an interesting question. He copies the question down on the paper, and starts to write his thoughts. His is bursting with ideas. However, he is a really bad writer as he always gets a “C” for his English essays. So, he throws away his pencil and speaks out loud to himself, trying to get his ideas straight and neat. After an hour of thinking, he feels tired, but he also feels smarter. He decides to do something like this again. But he clearly knows that he is not really self-motivated, so he tells his parents about his idea, hoping that he can get some supports. His parents love his idea as they think this would help Jesse to improve his writing skills. Then they have created a “Mystery Box”, in which full of notes with rewards written on it. Whenever Jesse completes his task, he will be given the chance to randomly pick up a reward from the “Mystery Box”.

UI design

Note2.png

My main design concept for this module is the universe. This is because I believe the process of critical thinking is just as traveling in the universe.

I hope such metaphor could give the user an immersive experience.

Explore2.png

If the user would like to practice his/her critical thinking, this is where he/she can find inspiration to start from.

As the user scrolling down to explore more questions, the background will appear with more different planets on the brims of left and right .

star.png

When the user has match certain rule, he/she will earn a reward.

The reward is in the form of a "mystery box".

Zodiac2.png

"Zodiac" is where the rewards are stored

When the user clicked on the star he/she earned, it will appear with information regarding the date and reason, and it could also lead the user directly to the place he/she earned the star.
